Honda vs TRON by jimmycanuck

TRON is one of those things in life that makes me yell “FUCK YES.” I’ve seen the movie countless times, and I’m even proud to admit that I beat the shit out of TRON 2.0 a few years back (hands down, the most underrated game ever.) That’s why, when I stumbled across this ad for the new Honda Civic, I immediately knew I needed to by a new car. See? Marketing directly to the car-less sociopath with a lightcycle fetish TOTALLY pays off.

Interesting sidenote – did you know that Wendy Carlos, the composer who brilliantly scored the movie, was born Walter Carlos? I guess he swapped one baton for another. Ba-dum bum.

Jenifesto here… wow, I have no idea where Jimmy Canuck is, and I was super busy yesterday as well. Just so you know we haven’t jumped ship, participated in a mass suicide, or run away and joined the circus (although that *is* tempting), here’s a little wayback playback for y’all. I’m of that age where the Mac Tonight commercial is a memory but very ill-defined. Part of the ill definition is that I thought it was a cartoon, not a horrendously scary man with a GIANT moon head on. Shudder. Anyways, enjoy!

Best. Ad. Ever. by jimmycanuck

I LOVE Office Space.  If you’ve ever worked in an office, especially in lower middle management, this thing is your opus.  It’s almost enough to make me miss the days of being shit all over again and again when I was the supervisor to a team of miscreants in the quality assurance department of a third party call center.

…almost.

I know this video has been making the rounds on the internet all week, but since I didn’t get around to seeing it until just now I figure some of you might be in the same boat.  This is a brilliant ad for World of Warcraft (that’s actually running on TV!) mashing up a great scene from Office Space with some WoW content.  C’est magnifique.

Just in time for the holidays, Ubisoft has seen fit to great us with a wonderful thanksgiving message from their long-running internet based ad campaign promoting Rayman Raving Rabbids.  Considering Rayman is the game getting the most face time in my Wii thus far, this was a nice little pick me up in the middle of my afternoon.

Happy Thanksgiving, yankee scum!!  😉

God bless you Michael Richards.  Your rampant racism and the falling apart that followed on Letterman has finally freed us from our white guilt.  Because seriously – if his absolute crumbling on Letterman doesn’t show you all how ridiculous the guilt we’re all supposed to carry around really is, I don’t know what will.

If you haven’t seen what happened at the Laugh Factory yet, peep the video above.  If you haven’t seen the apology on Letterman yet, peep below.

Stop reading if you can’t stand Harry by jenifesto

JimmyCanuck is cringing over this post, but I’m a super Harry Potter Fan Girl and I don’t care who knows it, and this weekend was rife with excitement over the Order of the Phoenix trailer. Not willing to shed 8 dollars or my dignity to go see Happy Feet and catch the trailer at the theatre, I was rabidly checking YouTube for a crappy bootlegged version, which natch, was promptly delivered on Saturday. However, it’s up for reals now, so neither you nor I have to endure someone with a shaky hand and the sound of popcorn bags.

But I digress: Jim asked if I could review something, and since I can’t think of anything else to review, here are my impressions on the trailer. I am, as most if not all HP fans are, totally loyal to the books. More awesome than the movies blah blah superiority cakes. I’ll probably catch a mighty shit storm for this, but I thought movie three sucked incredibly bad, movie four was better than three (could it be worse?), and movies one and two were good, with two being by far the best. I’ve since worked out a theory that the better the book, the worse the movie. Book one and movie one tie. Book two meh, movie two FANTASTIC. Book three my favourite, movie three f’ing awful. Book four quite good, movie not bad. So on this logic, book five (quite long, drawn out, over all kind of weak) is going to make the best movie yet.

So onto the trailer: Squeal!!! It’s only the teaser, coming in at less than a minute, but I’m totally loving what I’m seeing. First off, we see some new characters, like Umbridge and Bellatrix. Loving the Imelda Staunton as Umbridge, and Bonham Carter… I can take or leave, but I think she’ll turn out perfectly for the role. Secondly, Gary Oldman has finally gotten his head out the fire and ass into gear, and he’s actually given dialogue. I’ll omit my rant re: the shoddy treatment of Sirius in movie four, and just say it’s good to have him back in action. Third – The Ricker. I’m so pleased they put the occlumency scene in the trailer. It means it’s there and it’s going to be important in the film (I hope). If they gloss over that, I’ll have a fit. Not only because my Alan is rad, but I think it’s important in the series overall. Not that they haven’t taken out important/interesting stuff before, but you know. (Sidenote: if you’re going to make a big deal out of Harry being able to produce a patronus, and you make sure it’s a stag, why not explain the significance of it being a stag!? I mean, it’s not vital to the understanding, but it’s called texture and movie three lacked it, big time.) I like the overall vibe I’m getting from this trailer, like, maybe Harry’s angsty year will translate better on screen than it did in the book. I still like the book, but moody teenagers aren’t particularly fun no matter who they are, and I think I can say that with authority. Anyways, I’m super looking forward to the next trailer, and of course, the film in the summer.

It’s Not Parkinson’s, It’s the Caffeine by jimmycanuck

Now that he’s been shaking up the the stem cell debate recently, a lot of people are waxing nostalgic about Michael J. Fox.  Sure we all loved Teen Wolf and Family Ties – but if you people loved him into the 90’s as much as you did in the 80’s, maybe he could spring for some fucking tranquilizers or duct tape to him hold him in a chair.

I found this ad he did for a Japanese soft drink back in ’94 on the blog The Crazy Rants of Samantha Burns.  It was probably shot between takes of Doc Hollywood and Greedy – anyone who makes movies this bad deserves a hell of a lot worse than Parkinson’s.

Maybe if he’d laid off the caffinated foreign beverages, he wouldn’t twitch so damn much.

The 8 Greatest TV Openings of All Time by jimmycanuck

It’s been feeling a little video gamey around here lately, so I thought I should try and break up the monotony with a little trip to TV Land.  And so without further adieu, I give you the 8 Greatest TV Openings of All Time, in no particular order, as picked by me.

Knight Rider

Did anyone catch The Hoff on America’s Got Talent?  Turns out he’s legally retarded.  How in the fuck did we not see that one coming?

Sesame Street

Despite the 8 million Sesame Street videos on youtube, apparently the only opening they had in English was the vintage 1969 one.  All the rest were in freaky European languages you’ve never heard of – like Swedish, and Dutch.  Don’t believe me?  See for yourself.

The Brady Bunch

Ever since I learned that Robert Reed died of AIDS, I’ve been calling it “a case of the Mike Brady’s.”  It may seem mean, but hey – that’s what you get for fucking around on Florence Henderson in bus station bathrooms.

Transformers

Giant. Fucking. Robots.  If you need to question why this is on the list, I hope your car turns into a gun-toting goliath of steel and glass and crushes your meaty little body during the transformation.

The A-Team

If I was a Vietnam vet on the run for a crime I didn’t commit, I’d go to Mexico and bang hookers like Willem Dafoe in Born on the Fourth.

The Flintstones

I don’t know who decided that turning a show about beating your wife into a stone age cartoon was a good idea, but if I ever find out I’m going to give that man a hug.

The Muppet Show

Seriously – what the fuck was Gonzo?

Doctor Who

“And the award for TV Opening Most Likely to induce Seizures goes to….”  Listen – it may be a trippy mess, but the opening to Doctor Who has one of the most memorable TV theme songs EVER.  I was lucky enough to stumble across this video on youtube that ties every Doctor Who opening, from first to last, together in one clip.  Enjoy!

Disagree with the list?  Let me know what you think.

Back in September, I posted a video of Robert DeNiro and Elmo.  Little did I know that only two months later I’d stumble across this little gem.  If you’re a better parent than me, you’ll probably want to get the kids out of the room for this one.  😉
